The Flesh Needs Fire by Mario Diaz de Leon performed by Philip Snyder, flute and Jake Mann, clarinet
"EP", available here, features music for improvising flutist and live processing. Philip Snyder seeks to use electronics to open up possibilities and capitalize on indeterminacy. He achieves this through misusing effects and setting up long signal chains in unusual orders.
Philip's affinity for slowly evolving textures is essential to this release.
Track 1, "Thign," uses an atypically free use of looping effects to build up a bed of sound on which to improvise. Two additional effect signal chains create further layering of electronics. All sounds are created by processing of the flute.
Track 2, "Awy," functions as an alternate interpretation of the previously released track "Away" for flutist and field recording. Here, the same field recording conglomerate is employed which fades slowly from natural to urban ecosystems. Improvisational Shakuhachi is processed to fade, in tandem with the field recording, from natural to electronic.
Track 3, "Eclips" is inspired in equal measure by the Great North American Eclipse of 2017 and the Pink Floyd track of a similar name. This piece employs extensive vocoding. The flute becomes a kind of midi controller exploring and pushing the range of possibility of vocoder software.
around-past-away is an experimental field recording album that explores motion through sonic space in three recording projects.
around - a stationary recording device at the side of a lake records an instrumentalist as they walk around the lake, making sounds occasionally. Recorded at Camp Durant, NC.
past - various recordings are taken approaching then receding from a sonic object. Recorded at Foster Falls, TN.
away - various recording of an instrumentalist playing in environments becoming increasingly urban. Recorded in Congaree National Park and Columbia, SC.
